About the Collection
In 1995 Henk Kuiper started to systematically collect, organize and present his photos. As of January 1, 2000, his photo collection is accessable to the public via this website.
The PoH website opens with a photo of three trees. This photo was taken by Henk Kuiper – still analogue – in the North York Mores, England in 1995.
The three trees sybolize the three parts of the photo collection/website:
- the gallery
- the collections
- countries
Just as a tree branches into smaller and thinner branches with leaves at the ends, this website consists of 3 branched ’trees’ with no leaves but photos at the end of the ‘branches’.
The ‘artificial tree’, the ’theme tree’ and the ‘country tree’ are each divided and ‘branched’ in a different way. By ‘climbing’ further and further into one of the three trees, you get closer to the photo you are looking for.
In the ‘country tree’ (photo archive), the photos are classified based on “time” and “space”. The photos are grouped by continent>country>region>city/village, with the newest or youngest photos at the top.
The photo archive forms the basis of the entire website. This tree contains all the photos shown on the website. There is therefore no specific criterion on the basis of which the photos are selected.
In the ’theme tree’ (photo library), the photos are classified based on “type”, “people” or “object”. The photos are grouped into the themes of nature, activities and culture. The photos have been selected based on objective and technical aspects. Only a technically ‘good’ photo from the photo archive is shown in the photo library.
In the ‘art tree’ (photo gallery), the photos are classified based on “style”, “atmosphere” and “color” (color in the sense of expression). The photos are typical photos in the minimalist style of Henk Kuiper. The photos have been selected based on subjective and artistic aspects. Only an artistic and emotionally ‘beautiful’ photo from the photo archive is shown in the photo gallery.
The ‘artificial tree’ contains the smallest number of photos and is therefore the smallest of the three trees. The ’theme tree’ has more photos and is larger. The ‘country tree’, where all the photos from the website are shown, is the largest of the three trees.

Who What Where
The three parts of the photo collection/website can also be distinguished on the basis of the questions: who, what, where? (dimensions 3, 2 and 1).
- Who are you? (way of life) – spiritual (formless)
- What are you? (life’s work) – cultural (square)
- Where (and when) are you? (physical life) – nature (around)
The three colors of the website sybolize these three dimensions (blue: spiritual, orange: cultural and green: nature).
The three colors also symbolize the Dutch landscape; the blue skies, the orange roof tiles and the green pastures.
Every person navigates their way through life in their own way. At birth we are placed in time and space. Then we set out to become who (and what) we are. We gradually develop our own world of thought and lifestyle. Being, feeling, thinking and doing is in every person and comes into its own in nature (the basis, the silence, the emptiness).
Henk Kuiper has shaped his way through life in his own way and created his own small universe with the creation and layout of the website in the above three dimensions (including the classification and coding system developed).

Over de Collectie
In 1995 is Henk Kuiper gestart met het systematisch verzamelen, ordenen en presenteren van zijn foto’s. Vanaf 1 januari 2000 is zijn fotocollectie via deze website ontsloten en openbaar toegankelijk.
De PoH-website opent met een foto van drie bomen. Deze foto is door Henk Kuiper -nog analoog- gemaakt in de North York Mores, Engeland in 1995.
De drie bomen staan symbool voor de drie onderdelen van de fotocollectie/website:
- de galerij
- de collecties
- landen
Zoals een boom zich vertakt in steeds kleinere en dunnere takjes met aan de uiteinden de blaadjes, zo bestaat deze website uit 3 vertakte ‘bomen’ met aan het einde van de ’takken’ geen bladeren maar foto’s.
De ‘kunstboom’, de ’themaboom’ en de ‘landenboom’ zijn elk op een andere manier ingedeeld en ‘vertakt’. Door steeds verder in één van de drie bomen te ‘klimmen’, kom je steeds dichter bij de gezochte foto.
In de ‘landenboom’ (fotoarchief) zijn de foto’s ingedeeld op basis van “tijd” en “ruimte”. De foto’s zijn per werelddeel>land>streek>stad/dorp gegroepeerd, waarbij de nieuwste of jongste foto’s bovenaan staan.
Het fotoarchief vormt de basis van de hele website. In deze boom bevinden zich alle foto’s die op de website getoond worden. Er is dan ook geen bepaald criterium op basis waarvan de foto’s geselecteerd zijn.
In de ’themaboom’ (fotobibliotheek) zijn de foto’s ingedeeld op basis van “soort”, “mensen” of “object”. De foto’s zijn gegroepeerd in de thema’s natuur, activiteiten en cultuur. De foto’s zijn geselecteerd op basis van objectieve en technische aspecten. Alleen een technisch ‘goede’ foto uit het fotoarchief wordt in de fotobibliotheek getoond.
In de ‘kunstboom’ (fotogalerie) zijn de foto’s ingedeeld op basis van “stijl”, “sfeer” en “kleur” (kleur in de zin van expressie). De foto’s zijn typische foto’s in de minimalistische stijl van Henk Kuiper. De foto’s zijn geselecteerd op basis van subjectieve en kunstzinnige aspecten. Alleen een kunstzinnig en gevoelsmatig ‘mooie’ foto uit het fotoarchief wordt in de fotogalerie getoond.
De ‘kunstboom’ bevat het kleinste aantal foto’s en is dan ook de kleinste van de drie bomen. De ’themaboom’ heeft meer foto’s en is groter. De ‘landenboom’, waar alle foto’s van de website getoond worden, is de grootste van de drie bomen.

Wie Wat Waar
De drie onderdelen van de fotocollectie/website kunnen ook onderscheiden worden op basis van de vragen: wie, wat, waar? (dimensies 3, 2 en 1).
- Wie ben je? (levensstijl) – spiritueel (vormloos)
- Wat ben je? (levenswerk) – cultureel (vierkant)
- Waar (en wanneer) ben je? (fysiek leven) – natuur (rond)
De drie kleuren van de website staan symbool voor deze drie dimensies (blauw: spiritueel, oranje: cultureel en groen: natuur).
Ook staan de drie kleuren symbool voor het Nederlandse landschap met zijn blauwe luchten, oranje dakpannen en groene weilanden.
Ieder mens legt op eigen wijze zijn weg door het leven af. Bij de geboorte worden we geplaatst in de tijd en de ruimte. Vervolgens gaan we op weg om te worden wie (en wat) we zijn. Gaandeweg ontwikkelen we onze eigen gedachtewereld en leefstijl. Zijn, voelen, denken en doen zit in ieder mens en komt het beste tot zijn recht in de natuur (de basis, de stilte, de leegte).
Henk Kuiper heeft op eigen wijze zijn weg door het leven vormgegeven, en met de creatie en indeling van de website in bovenstaande drie dimensies (incl. het hierbij ontwikkelde classificatie- en coderingssysteem) zijn eigen klein universum gecreëerd.
