About Photography

In his pictures of isolated objects (buildings or persons), Henk Kuiper investigates how photography continually balances on the edge between the exact representation of reality and and autonomous visual practise that does not reproduce reality but rather transcends it.

Minimalistic

Henk Kuiper creates minimalist images. He removes existing objects (buildings or people) from their context, isolates them from the existing environment and places them in an ‘empty’ or alienating decor, creating a new, minimalist ‘reality’.

If the subject of the photo is a building, Henk Kuiper only photographs a characteristic detail of the building, consisting of an even pattern of similar colors, often dominant, large, powerfully depicted and centrally positioned, and places this against a contrasting background. consisting of sky and clouds.

If the subject of the photo is a person (or animal), Henk Kuiper often photographs the person small, anonymous, modest and marginally positioned, and places him against a contrasting background, consisting of a pattern of similar colors that is as even as possible.

Characteristics

The minimalist photos have 3 characteristics.

Simplicity. Each photo consists of only two parts; a building or person as subject, depicted against a background designed to be as contrasting and minimalist as possible.
Modesty. The subject is small, anonymous and depicted marginally (person), or large but depicted as a small detail (building), and has a striking presence compared to the minimalist designed background.
Quirkiness. The manner of depicting and positioning the subject in relation to the background is somewhat unusual and alienating, but is therefore also ‘colourful’ and authentic.

Why

Simplicity. Life is often simpler than we make it (“Life is simple”).
Modesty. You can tell a lot with little image information (“Less is more”).
Quirkiness. The distinctive way of photographing gives ‘colour’ and makes life a little more pleasant. (“Light up my day”).

Round or Square

The rectangular shapes in the photos symbolize culture, or the order and regularity that people want to bring into reality. The round shapes in the photos symbolize nature, which disrupts the order and regularity of humans but at the same time also provides them with beauty. With this, Henk Kuiper wants to show that man can cultivate nature – and thinks he can be the boss of nature -, but it shows again and again how powerful and unpredictable nature is and how she chooses her own path. The round shapes give beauty, color and meaning to the photo.

Henk Kuiper’s photography is a search for simplicity, beauty and the essence of life, a search for the small pearls (round shapes) in the large (rectangular structured) world.

In life as in photography:

Beauty is fragile. Because beauty comes and goes unexpectedly, lasts for a short time and is therefore not self-evident. Beauty lies in the small, not in the size. Small precious moments give color and meaning to life, small ‘pearls’ give color and meaning to the photo. Making that beauty visible is an art.
A modest attitude of man or a modest representation in photography is a condition/facilitates the revelation/making visible of the vulnerable beauty.
Ordinary (inconspicuous/anonymous/modest) people are better able to make big results of vulnerable beauty visible with small actions.

The Logo

In the style of Henk Kuiper, the PoH logo consists of a minimalist designed figure, composed of round and rectangular shapes (circle and rectangle), which is created by the addition of a contrasting and complementary accent (the square on the circle, the ‘pearl’ in the image) takes on meaning and turns the figure into a camera.

Deepening

According to Henk Kuiper, there are three types of photos. The first type, called “Photo 0.0” by Henk Kuiper, consists of ‘normal’ standard photos. The second and third types (“Photo 0.5” and “Photo 1.0”) are photos in the minimalist style of Henk Kuiper.

Photo 0.0 is the photo that depicts the subject in its recognizable environment. This photo is a representation of reality as faithfully as possible. The photo does not have a clearly recognizable style of its own. In this context, Henk Kuiper speaks of a ‘non-photo’ or “Photo 0.0”.

Photo 0.5 is the photo that only shows an even pattern of similar colors (minimalist photos). This structure has been filtered and framed from the recognizable environment by Henk Kuiper. The result is a minimalist image of reality, but with a maximum and powerful appearance. The photo shows simplicity, radiates tranquility and is pure. However, the photo is not yet ‘finished’. The photo is not yet ‘alive’ and has no meaning yet. In this context, Henk Kuiper speaks of a ‘half photo’ or “Photo 0.5”.

Photo 1.0 is the photo in which a person is placed against a contrasting background and is therefore isolated and alienated from his familiar environment (photos). The subject (the person) forms a contrasting, but also complementary accent in structure, shape and color in the decor of the minimalist ‘half’ photo. The presence of the accent in the photo is not self-evident, even uncertain, fragile and vulnerable. At the same time, the accent is essential to the photo because it gives color and beauty to the photo. It tells a story, conveys an idea, also raises questions, in short, gives the photo meaning and brings the photo to life. The accent complements the ‘half’ photo and makes it ‘whole’. In this context, Henk Kuiper speaks of a ‘whole photo’ or “Photo 1.0”.

To connect. Photo 0.0, Photo 0.5 and Photo 1.0 together form a unity and are inextricably linked as a triptych, not only because the three photos were taken at the same location and time, but especially because a connection can be made in a combination of the three photos. are placed between everyday reality (Photo 0.0) and the artistic reality of Henk Kuiper (Photo 0.5 and Photo 1.0). By showing his photos in combination, Henk Kuiper wants to connect everyday life and art and bring them closer together.

By showing his photos in combination, Henk Kuiper creates the opportunity for the viewer to better experience and understand the different layers of Photos 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0. This allows the spectator to take themselves to a higher level (elevate). As an educator, Henk Kuiper believes it is important that people try to develop themselves throughout their lives and try to take themselves to a higher level because knowledge and insight lead to greater understanding and appreciation.

According to Henk Kuiper, it is important that everyday life and art come closer together and that people gain more understanding and appreciation for art, because art is enriching and art inspires. Because art deepens and connects. Because art moves and art sometimes disrupts and disrupts. For Henk Kuiper, art is ‘food for the soul’ (-art feeds the mind-). Art ultimately makes life a little more pleasant.

Over Fotografie

In zijn foto’s van geïsoleerde objecten (gebouwen of personen), onderzoekt Henk Kuiper hoe de fotografie voortdurend balanceert op de grens tussen een getrouwe representatie van de werkelijkheid en een autonome beeldpraktijk die de werkelijkheid niet zozeer reproduceert maar overstijgt.

Minimalistisch

Henk Kuiper maakt minimalistische beelden. Hij haalt bestaande objecten (gebouwen of personen) uit hun context, isoleert hen uit de bestaande omgeving en plaatst hen in een ‘leeg’ of vervreemdend decor, waardoor een nieuwe, minimalistische ‘werkelijkheid’ ontstaat.

Is het onderwerp van de foto een gebouw, dan fotografeert Henk Kuiper alleen een karakteristiek detail van het gebouw, bestaande uit een gelijkmatig patroon van gelijksoortige kleuren, vaak dominant, groot, krachtig afgebeeld en centraal gepositioneerd, en plaatst hij dit tegen een contrasterende achtergrond, bestaande uit lucht en wolken.

Is het onderwerp van de foto een persoon (of dier), dan fotografeert Henk Kuiper de persoon vaak klein, anoniem, bescheiden en marginaal gepositioneerd, en plaatst hij hem tegen een contrasterende achtergrond, bestaande uit een zoveel mogelijk gelijkmatig patroon van gelijksoortige kleuren.

Kenmerken

De minimalistische foto’s hebben 3 kenmerken.

Eenvoud. Elke foto bestaat uit slechts twee onderdelen; een gebouw of persoon als onderwerp, afgebeeld tegen een zo contrasterend en minimalistisch mogelijk vormgegeven achtergrond.
Bescheidenheid. Het onderwerp is klein, anoniem en marginaal afgebeeld (persoon), of groot maar als klein detail afgebeeld (gebouw), en is ten opzichte van de minimalistisch vormgegeven achtergrond markant aanwezig.
Eigenzinnigheid. De wijze van afbeelden en positioneren van het onderwerp ten opzichte van de achtergrond is enigszins ongebruikelijk en werkt vervreemdend maar is daardoor juist ook ‘kleurrijk’ en authentiek.

Waarom

Eenvoud. Het leven is vaak eenvoudiger dan wij het maken (“Life is simple”).
Bescheidenheid. Met weinig beeldinformatie kun je veel vertellen (“Less is more”).
Eigenzinnigheid. De onderscheidende wijze van fotograferen geeft ‘kleur’ en maakt het leven iets aangenamer. (“Light up my day”).

Rond of Vierkant

De rechthoekige vormen in de foto’s staan symbool voor de cultuur, oftewel de orde en regelmaat die de mens in de werkelijkheid wil aanbrengen. De ronde vormen in de foto’s staan symbool voor de natuur, die de orde en regelmaat van de mens doorkruist maar haar daarmee tegelijkertijd ook van schoonheid voorziet. Hiermee wil Henk Kuiper laten zien dat de mens de natuur kan cultiveren -en denkt de natuur de baas te kunnen zijn-, maar telkens opnieuw blijkt hoe krachtig en onvoorspelbaar de natuur is en zij haar eigen weg kiest. De ronde vormen geven hiermee schoonheid, kleur en betekenis aan de foto.

De fotografie van Henk Kuiper is een zoektocht naar eenvoud, schoonheid en de essentie van het leven, een zoektocht naar de kleine parels (ronde vormen) in de grote (rechthoekig gestructureerde) wereld.

Zowel in het leven als in de fotografie geldt:

Schoonheid is kwetsbaar. Want schoonheid komt en gaat onverwacht, duurt kort en is dus niet vanzelfsprekend. Schoonheid zit in het kleine, niet in het grootte. Kleine kostbare momenten geven kleur en betekenis aan het leven, kleine ‘parels’ geven kleur en betekenis aan de foto. Het zichtbaar maken van die schoonheid is een kunst.
Een bescheiden opstelling van de mens of een bescheiden voorstelling in de fotografie, is een voorwaarde/vergemakkelijkt het zich openbaren/zichtbaar maken van de kwetsbare schoonheid.
Gewone (onopvallende/anonieme/bescheiden) mensen zijn beter in staat om met kleine acties grote resultaten van kwetsbare schoonheid zichtbaar te maken.

Het Logo

In de stijl van Henk Kuiper bestaat het PoH-logo uit een minimalistisch vormgegeven figuur, opgebouwd uit ronde en rechthoekige vormen (cirkel en rechthoek), dat door de toevoeging van een contrasterend en complementerend accent (het vierkantje aan de cirkel, het ‘pareltje’ in het beeld) betekenis krijgt en het figuur doet veranderen in een fototoestel.

Verdieping

Volgens Henk Kuiper bestaan er drie soorten foto’s. De eerste soort, door Henk Kuiper “Photo 0.0” genoemd, bestaat uit ‘gewone’ standaardfoto’s. De tweede en derde soort (“Photo 0.5” en “Photo 1.0”) zijn foto’s in de minimalistische stijl van Henk Kuiper.

Photo 0.0 is de foto waarop het onderwerp in zijn herkenbare omgeving wordt afgebeeld. Bij deze foto gaat het om een zo getrouw mogelijke representatie van de werkelijkheid. De foto heeft geen duidelijk herkenbare eigen stijl. Henk Kuiper spreekt in dit verband van een ‘non-foto’ of “Photo 0.0”.

Photo 0.5 is de foto waarop alleen een gelijkmatig patroon van gelijksoortige kleuren is te zien (minimalistische foto’s). Deze structuur is door Henk Kuiper uit de herkenbare omgeving gefilterd en ingekaderd. Het resultaat is een minimalistische afbeelding van de werkelijkheid, maar met een maximale en krachtige uitstraling. De foto toont eenvoud, straalt rust uit en is puur. De foto is echter nog niet ‘af’. De foto ‘leeft’ nog niet en heeft nog geen betekenis. Henk Kuiper spreekt in dit verband van een ‘halve foto’ of “Photo 0.5”.

Photo 1.0 is de foto waarop een persoon tegen een contrasterende achtergrond is geplaatst en daardoor geïsoleerd en vervreemd wordt van zijn vertrouwde omgeving (foto’s). Het onderwerp (de persoon) vormt een in structuur, vorm en kleur contrasterend, maar ook complementerend accent in het decor van de minimalistische ‘halve’ foto. De aanwezigheid van het accent in de foto is niet vanzelfsprekend, zelfs onzeker, breekbaar en kwetsbaar. Tegelijkertijd is het accent essentieel voor de foto omdat het kleur en schoonheid geeft aan de foto. Het vertelt een verhaal, brengt een idee over, roept ook vragen op, kortom, geeft de foto betekenis en brengt de foto tot leven. Het accent complementeert de ‘halve’ foto en maakt deze ‘heel’. Henk Kuiper spreekt in dit verband van een ‘hele foto’ of “Photo 1.0”.

Verbinden. Photo 0.0, Photo 0.5 en Photo 1.0 vormen tezamen een eenheid en zijn als een drieluik onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden, niet alleen omdat de drie foto’s op dezelfde locatie en tijd gemaakt zijn, maar vooral ook omdat in een combinatie van de drie foto’s een verbinding kan worden gelegd tussen de alledaagse werkelijkheid (Photo 0.0) en de kunstzinnige werkelijkheid van Henk Kuiper (Photo 0.5 en Photo 1.0). Henk Kuiper wil door zijn foto’s in combinatie te tonen het alledaagse leven en de kunst met elkaar verbinden en dichter bij elkaar brengen.

Door zijn foto’s in combinatie te tonen creëert Henk Kuiper voor de toeschouwer de mogelijkheid om de verschillende lagen van de Photos 0.0, 0.5 en 1.0 beter te beleven en te begrijpen. Hiermee kan de toeschouwer zichzelf naar een hoger niveau brengen (verheffen). Als onderwijsman vindt Henk Kuiper het belangrijk dat mensen levenslang proberen zichzelf te ontwikkelen en zichzelf naar een hoger niveau proberen te brengen omdat kennis en inzicht leidt tot meer begrip en waardering.

Volgens Henk Kuiper is het belangrijk dat het alledaagse leven en de kunst dichter bij elkaar komen te staan en mensen meer begrip en waardering voor kunst krijgen, omdat kunst verrijkend is en kunst inspireert. Omdat kunst verdieping brengt en kunst verbindt. Omdat kunst ontroert en kunst soms ontregelt en ontwricht. Kunst is voor Henk Kuiper ‘voeding voor de ziel’ (-art feeds the mind-). Kunst maakt het leven uiteindelijk iets aangenamer.
